Comprehensive Medical Treatment

George Junior Republic’s commitment to health is part of our mission to transform at risk youth into responsible adults who are prepared to make a lasting connection to the world around them.

George Junior Republic’s healthcare is comprehensive and provides a high standard of care.  In addition to the initial health assessment, George Junior Republic staff contacts the families and placing agencies to gather all medical information. This full medical assessment includes all youth who are in care.

Assessment Within 24 Hours of Placement

Within the first 24 hours of arrival, a nurse conducts an extensive interview and assessment of every youth. The medical staff initiates an individual plan of care following this interview, and safety plans are sent to all direct care staff when indicated for youth who show indications of risk such as asthma, seizures, suicidal ideation, or severe allergic reactions. This assessment is followed by a complete physical conducted by our primary care physician.

Medical Professionals Provide Quality Care

Guiding the health and wellness of our youth are two primary care physicians, two board certified child and adolescent psychiatrists, and more than 20 RNs and LPNs who are available 24 hours a day. Medical appointments, psychiatric evaluations, medication administration, and follow-up care are provided at our infirmary, which is centrally located on the campus.

Additional on site services include dental care, family planning services, phlebotomy, optometry, and psychological testing. Specialized medical care is provided by a number of physicians in the surrounding area, with the majority of patients being seen at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Health and Wellness

George Junior Republic supports health and wellness.  Historical programming to promote youth health included both the Pointing Adolescents Through Health (PATH) Program and The Healthy Lifestyle Leadership Program.  Both programs invited youth with a body mass index (BMI) score of 30 or higher to participate in enhanced physical activity five times per week. The program also included health education regarding lifestyle change and nutrition.  The goal of both programs was to develop individual youth plans for weight reduction, improved strength, and overall fitness.
