Reaching Youth through Athletics

Youth at George Junior Republic have the opportunity to participate in both varsity and intramural sports. Participation teaches students discipline, cooperation, teamwork, and responsibility, while requiring that they adhere to their treatment program and maintain good academic standing.

George Junior Republic youth have the opportunity to participate in varsity level Basketball, as well as Track and Field.  The youth in these programs compete in Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) District 10.  Students are reminded that being a part of these teams is a privilege that is earned through progress in our program, and that good character is more important than whether one wins or loses.

Varsity Basketball

The George Junior Republic Basketball Team competes in the PIAA District 10 AAAA Region 5 and boasts a competitive schedule against local public schools. The schedule includes tip off tournaments, holiday tournaments, and a 20 game schedule. This schedule offers athletes opportunities to experience a positive, competitive environment in local communities while serving as role models for their fellow students.

Varsity Track and Field

Track and Field athletes compete in local meets, county invitationals, District 10 invitational meets, and state competitions. Track athletes have the opportunity to compete in all events offered in PIAA track and field competition. Tryouts for the team are held in early spring, preparing the team for spring season competition.

Intramural Sports

Intramural sports at George Junior Republic help reinforce the lessons of our treatment programs. Students learn to exercise self discipline, build self esteem, and place trust in others. The competitive environment encourages students not only to participate, but also to positively engage with others, take pride in their efforts, and learn to respect rules and their opponents.

Intramural sporting events at George Junior Republic include:

  • March Madness basketball tournament
  • Flag football
  • Summer softball
  • Kickball
  • Billiards
  • Ping Pong
  • Summer Carnival for youth, staff, and families of our staff
  • Swimming lessons by Red Cross certified lifeguards
