Students Engage with Society Through Reading
As part of the mission to help youth grow into responsible adults, George Junior Republic offers students many opportunities to engage with the community while receiving a complete education. One of these opportunities is the annual Read Across America celebration that takes place each March in the Grove City Area School District. Read Across America is sponsored by the National Education Association and is observed in school districts across the country.
Celebrating the Life and Works of Dr. Seuss
Centered around the March 2 birthday of Theodore “Dr. Seuss” Geisel, Read Across America gives older students the chance to volunteer as Cat in the Hat readers. These students visit elementary schools, preschools, and day care centers in the school district, reading and performing the works of Dr. Seuss. George Junior Republic is proud to have many of its students volunteer to serve the local community each year, sharing the joy of reading and setting an example for area children. This service experience helps to connect youth to the world around them, teaching them to interact with society in a positive way while developing needed social skills.
Youth Service Shared with the Entire Community
Since first participating in the program, George Junior Republic’s Read Across America volunteers have performed for college classes, school board meetings, community luncheons, and senior citizens. The students not only provide education and entertainment to both students and adults, but they also take great pride in their role as a “Cat in the Hat” while learning to become part of something greater than themselves. Each year our students share their inspirational message of the joy of reading and touch the lives of more than 1,000 area elementary and preschool students.
