Slippery Rock University Therapy Dogs

Mondays have quickly become a favorite day on campus thanks to our furry friends from Slippery Rock University! Each week, the SRU therapy dogs stop by to spread comfort, connection, and a whole lot of joy.

SRU students earning a minor in animal-assisted interventions and those in music therapy are collaborating to provide interventions for youth. Canine Club with Music integrates certified therapy dogs and music to help youth address beneficial mental health topics. Topics for this semester include self-esteem, stress management, self-care, building confidence, and feelings identification.

For many youth on campus, being away from home can pose unique emotional challenges. The presence of therapy dogs offers more than just a fun visit—it provides a sense of familiarity and comfort that reminds them of home. Pet therapy helps reduce feelings of loneliness, eases stress, and creates space for positive emotional expression.

Research shows that spending time with animals can lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety, and boost mood. But beyond the science, it’s the emotional connection that makes the biggest impact. When a young person sits with a therapy dog, they’re experiencing unconditional acceptance—no judgment, no expectations, just care. That simple bond can help them feel grounded, supported, and seen.

These weekly visits are a beautiful example of how CARE extends beyond words. Through a gentle paw, a wagging tail, or a shared moment of calm, our youth are reminded that compassion and connection are always within reach.

We’re grateful to Slippery Rock University and their dedicated therapy team for bringing this healing presence to our campus each Monday. You’re helping us live out the CARE philosophy—one paw print at a time.
