Building a Culture of Encouragement at GJR

Valentine’s Day is often framed around romance, but at George Junior Republic, we use it as a reminder of something just as important: taking time to encourage the people we work alongside every day.

This year marks our third year running our Valentine’s encouragement program across all GJR affiliates. The concept is intentionally simple: employees can share short notes of gratitude, recognition, and support for their coworkers. No pressure to write something perfect—just genuine messages that communicate, I appreciate you, I see your effort, and I’m glad you’re part of this team.

Why this matters in our work

In nonprofit work—especially in mental health and social services—our mission is meaningful, and the work can be demanding. Many roles require steady focus, emotional energy, and professionalism in situations that are not always easy.

That is why encouragement matters. Recognizing one another strengthens morale, reinforces connection, and helps build the kind of culture where people feel supported as they continue doing important work.

A third-year tradition worth continuing

The value of this program is not in the size of the gesture—it is in the consistency. As this tradition enters its third year, it continues to reflect who we are as an organization: teams that notice and value one another and take the time to say so.

These messages also highlight the effort that can easily go unspoken:

  • the coworker who stays calm and solutions-focused during challenging moments

  • the teammate who steps in to help without being asked

  • the person who keeps details organized so others can do their jobs well

  • the staff member who brings consistency and care to their work every day

CARE in action

CARE is not only something we implement with the youth and families we serve—it is also a lens for how we work with one another. When we intentionally recognize effort and encourage one another, we strengthen the foundation of a healthy workplace culture across teams and affiliates.

This Valentine’s Day initiative is one small but meaningful way we put CARE into practice.

Keeping the momentum going

While Valentine’s Day provides a natural reminder, the impact of encouragement extends far beyond one week. A quick note, a message of thanks, or a moment of recognition can shift the tone of a day and reinforce the sense that we are working toward a shared purpose. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped continue this tradition.

Happy Valentine’s Day, GJR. Not because it is about romance, but because it is a reminder that supporting one another is part of how we build a stronger tomorrow—together.
