Why We Chose CARE: Building a Culture of Relationships, Respect, and Resilience

At George Junior Republic in PA, our mission has always centered around helping youth heal, grow, and thrive. Over the years, we’ve evolved in many ways, but one thing has remained constant: our commitment to creating a safe, nurturing, and empowering environment. That’s why we are proud to introduce and implement the CARE (Children and Residential Experiences) model.

What is CARE?
CARE is a research-based, trauma-informed framework developed by the Residential Child Care Project at Cornell University. It’s built on six evidence-based principles that focus on creating a developmentally enriching environment for the persons we serve in our residential programming. These principles—developmentally focused, family-involved, relationship-based, competence-centered, trauma-informed, and ecologically oriented—guide our interactions with young people and with one another.

Why We’re Adopting CARE
The decision to adopt the CARE model wasn’t just about implementing another program; it was about investing in a long-term cultural shift. Through CARE, we’re aligning our practices, policies, and daily interactions to reflect what science tells us about trauma, healing, and human connection. This model provides a common language, shared values, and practical tools that empower every staff member to make a meaningful difference, regardless of their role.

What CARE Means for Employees and Youth
CARE is more than a set of guidelines—it’s a mindset. It means we view challenging behaviors through a trauma-informed lens. It means we emphasize strong, healthy relationships as the foundation of change. It means we’re creating an environment where youth feel seen, safe, and supported—and where employees feel confident, collaborative, and connected to a greater purpose.

Looking Ahead
This blog will serve as a space to highlight our CARE journey—from success stories and reflections, to tools, trainings, and mental health resources. We’ll be sharing insights from staff, celebrating progress, and exploring how CARE is transforming our work from the inside out.

We’re excited to walk this path together. Because when we care deeply and act intentionally, we create a culture where everyone has the chance to succeed.
