Across several units, youth on campus had the opportunity to make Mother’s Day cards for the important women in their lives. Some created cards for their mothers, while others chose to write to grandmothers, foster moms, or other mother figures who have supported them.
For many youth, the activity allowed them to take pride in what they made, from choosing colors and designs to deciding exactly what they wanted to write. Some cards were simple and sweet. Others included longer messages of love, gratitude, and appreciation. Each one gave youth the chance to express themselves in their own way.
Living away from home is hard for children, and it can also be hard for their families. Holidays often make that separation feel extra difficult. A familiar activity like writing a Mother’s Day card gives youth a safe and thoughtful way to acknowledge those feelings while also maintaining the relationships that remain important to them.
Through a CARE-informed approach, staff help create opportunities for youth to stay connected with family in ways that are developmentally appropriate and emotionally supportive. Card-making may seem like a simple activity, but for many youth, it offers a chance to be creative, choose their words carefully, reflect on their relationships, and participate in a holiday tradition that many children experience at home or in school.
Whether a child is able to see their mother on Mother’s Day or not, the thought still counts. These cards represent effort, connection, and the importance of family, even when family relationships are complex or separated by distance.
At George Junior Republic, activities like this reflect the importance of supporting the whole child, including the relationships, memories, and emotions they carry with them. Mother’s Day is not the same for everyone, but every youth deserves the opportunity to feel seen, supported, and connected.
