Creating a Sense of Home for the Holidays

As the holiday season approached, cottages and units across campus were decorated, creating warm, welcoming living environments for the youth in our care. This effort was intentional—focused not only on seasonal décor, but on fostering comfort, stability, and a sense of belonging.

Decorating was a collaborative process. Youth and staff worked together to select decorations, plan layouts, and transform shared spaces. These activities encouraged cooperation, communication, and shared responsibility, while allowing youth to take pride in their work and express creativity in appropriate and structured ways.

This initiative aligns closely with the CARE model. It is relationship-based, strengthening positive interactions between youth and staff. It is developmentally focused, supporting teamwork, decision-making, and accountability. It is also trauma-informed, recognizing that the holidays can be a challenging time and emphasizing the importance of creating safe, supportive, and predictable environments.

For many youth, participating in holiday decorating is a meaningful experience that helps normalize the season and reinforces the idea of home. The decorated cottages reflect more than holiday spirit—they represent intentional care, shared effort, and a commitment to creating spaces where youth feel supported and valued throughout the holiday season.
