Advancing Education Through Technology

Thanks to a generous grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, George Junior Republic in Pennsylvania (GJR in PA) received 42 new HP EliteBooks earlier this year to strengthen youth digital literacy.

After a planning period, the GJR in PA Computer Lab officially launched last month, welcoming over 30 youth in its first section! Led by former cottage parent and long-time IT staff member, Andy Roberts, the lab introduces students to essential Microsoft Office skills through the PA SkillUp/Metrix Learning digital training platform. This online platform provides instant feedback at the end of each lesson, allowing youth to learn faster while staying engaged. Mr. Roberts especially enjoys teaching the class as it combines his expertise in IT with his passion for education.

Here are some snapshots of Cottage W taking their first digital literacy assessment yesterday to measure their skills at the beginning of class. At the end of the 8-week course, participants will complete an exit test to measure their progress.

This initiative supports GJR’s CARE philosophy—Consistency, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence—by helping youth take ownership of their learning while developing skills that build confidence and independence. Through structured lessons and hands-on experience, the Computer Lab encourages accountability in completing digital tasks, respect for technology, teamwork, and excellence in mastering practical skills that prepare students for future education and employment opportunities.
